Do you automatically associate meditation with the Judaeo-Christian religion? Maybe not, but it’s inherent in our faith, and an ancient way to honor God that’s helped countless people in our times.
In Genesis 24:63, an early biblical reference says, “In the early evening, Isaac went out in the fields to meditate.…” Instead of that word, however, some translations use synonyms such as “pray,” “think about,” “ponder,” or “reflect “ – all of which help to define what it means to “meditate.”
Prayers, meditations, reflections, deep thoughts, and insights fill the book of Psalms as these and other verses show:
Simply Give Thought to God.
“I think about You, Lord, before I go to sleep, and I meditate during the watches of the night,” Psalm 63:6.
Reflect on God’s Marvelous Acts.
“I reflect on all You have done and meditate on Your mighty deeds,” Psalm 77:12.
Think about the Ways of God.
“I meditate on Your guiding principles and think about Your ways,” Psalm 119:15.
Ponder All God Has Done.
“Lord, I remember the days of old. I meditate on all You’ve done. I ponder the work of Your hands,” Psalm 143:5.
Keep Good News in Your Heart, Mind, and Spirit.
When shepherds heard angels rejoicing over the birth of Jesus, they hurried to see for themselves and to share their good news with His mother. As Luke 2:19 records it, “Mary kept their words in her heart and pondered them.”
Focus on Everything Worthy of Notice.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things,” Philippians 4:8, King James Version of the Bible (KJV.)
Heavenly Father, We praise You for Your ongoing goodness in our lives and throughout all Your creation. Help us, Lord, to fix our minds on You as we go about our day and as we lie down to rest each night. Please give us the prayers to pray and remind us to worship You and meditate on Your love, forgiveness, and healing power in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
