Prayer begins by calling on God.
Adam and Eve had a third son, whom they named Seth, who also had a son named Enosh. “It was then that people began to call on the Name of the Lord,” Genesis 4:26.
Throughout the Bible, people of great faith called on the Name of the Lord – people such as:
Abraham
Isaac
Jacob
Moses
Elijah
Elisha
Judges
Prophets
Calling on the Name of the Lord empowered the very Bible people we hear about in Sunday schools and in Bible classes for children and adults. The strong faith of those biblical giants timelessly encourages us today.
The Name of the Lord brings power.
King David made this declaration, “I will call on the Lord, Who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from my enemies,” 2 Samuel 22:4, King James Version (KJV.)
Prophets reported what they heard from God, Who said, “…they shall call on My Name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is My people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God,” Zechariah 13:9b, KJV.
The Prophet Joel further proclaimed, “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be delivered,” Joel 2:32, KJV.
The New Testament echoes the prophecies: “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved,” Acts 2:21.
“For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved,” Romans 10:13.
The Gospel of John tells us that Jesus performed many miracles and mighty works that were not recorded. However, “… these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His Name,” John 20:31, KJV.
Jesus is the Name to call!
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him,” Colossians 3:17, KJV.
“…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth,” Philippians 2:10, KJV.
“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment,” 1 Corinthians 1:10, KJV.
May we call on the Lord every day! And may we become One in Christ Jesus. So be it! Amen.
