Ever since God breathed life into mankind, His very breath brought us into an intimate relationship with Him. Like, how much closer can we get!
Despite the rift caused by disobedience, God continued to woo and pursue, until, by Genesis 4:26, Adam and Eve’s grandson began to call on the Name of the Lord. By Genesis 5:22-24, Enoch “walked with God” as did his great-grandson Noah. (See Genes 6:9.) Then one of Noah’s sons, Shem, became the ancestor of Abraham, whom James 2:23, “…called the Friend of God.”
With Abraham, God made a covenant– a binding agreement which confirmed the relationship between the two but which, in perpetuity, also included Abraham’s descendants. Jacob, for example, said, “I have seen God face to face,” Genesis 32:30. And generations later, “The Lord spoke with Moses face to face as a person speaks with a friend,” Genesis 33:11.
Now, some people might think, “Why would God want me for a friend? It don’t think He even knows me!” but Psalm 139:1-4 says otherwise: “Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I get up. You perceive my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down. You are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, You know what I’m going to say!”
Throughout the Bible, God makes it clear that He really, really wants us! He wants our friendship. He wants a personal relationship with us. Why? In Jeremiah 31:3, the prophet quoted God as saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”
And “everlasting” means just that. In Hebrews 13:5, God promises, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
God’s Son, Jesus promises that too. Matthew 28:20 quotes the Risen Christ as saying, “Lo, I Am with you always….”
When the Lord makes a promise, we can trust it to be true.1 Corinthians 1:9 says, “God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with His son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for wanting us! Thank You for letting us know just how much You want and love us when You gave Your only Son to bring us into eternal fellowship with You (John 3:16.) Thank You and praise You for encouraging each of us to come to You in person. And now, as Paul prayed in 2 Corinthians 13:13, we ask that the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us always. Amen.
